As per one analyst group, MediaTek may have just surpassed Qualcomm to argue the largest market share of any chipmaker for Android devices in the United States.
So, according to IDC's quarterly mobile phone sales tracker, MediaTek chips accounted for 48.1 percent of all Android phones sold in the United States in Q4 2021, compared to Qualcomm's 43.9 percent, as PCMag noted.
These figures represented a sharp reversal from the previous quarter when MediaTek held a 41% market share to Qualcomm's 56%.
According to IDC, MediaTek's surge has been largely fueled by Galaxy A12, Galaxy A32, and G Pure sales, which accounted for 51% of MediaTek phones sold in Q4 and 24% of the total Android market in the United States.
But even so, there are mixed reports; according to Counterpoint Research's report, Qualcomm will retain a 55% market share in Q4 2021, while MediaTek will have a 37% market share so that Qualcomm may keep its crown for the time being.

The Growth of MediaTek
MediaTek is not as well-known as Qualcomm for smartphone processors (which has long been the dominant force for Android devices in the US, especially for high-end flagships).
However, the company has already been consistently growing in the United States through low- and mid-range devices such as the LG Velvet and Moto G Pure.
The tactic for MediaTek will be trying to convince manufacturers and consumers similar that it is much more top quality chips — such as the company's flagship Dimensity 9000, which the company claims is more potent than Qualcomm's Snapdragon 888 — are worth a try out as company tries to break into the premium Android device market.
MediaTek is not taking it easy on its laurels: the company has announced a trio of new chips to advance the company's goal of providing more powerful 5G chips. The high end of the market is the Density 8100 and 8000, which are direct descendants of the more strong Density 9000.
While both of those chips are built on TSMC's 5nm process (rather than the 4nm process used throughout the Density 9000) and featureless powerful CPU and GPU cores, they will include some AI and 5G features introduced on the higher-end platform.
Furthermore, the company announced the availability of a new 5G-capable Dimensity 1300 chipset, an upgraded version of the company's Density 1200 model with AI performance enhancements.
All three of the latest chips are scheduled to debut in smartphones in the first quarter of 2022, where they're expected to aid MediaTek's growth in the United States (whether Qualcomm beats it out or not).
Additional information from Counterpoint Research indicates conflicting reports regarding whether MediaTek has truly surpassed Qualcomm in terms of market share in the United States.

Samsung's Galaxy S22 and S22 Plus feature a similar design to the S21, but with improved hardware, cameras, and Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor. They're not particularly exciting, but they strike the right balance of specs and style.
