Remote production 2.0

Remote production

Broadcasters are tasked with generating more live news with tight resources and moving to at-home/REMI (remote-integration\model) production. Remote manufacturing, when correctly implemented, may minimize the mobility of people and equipment, boost equipment utilization, decrease on-site set-up delays, and maximize the productivity of production teams.

Historically there have been three primary issues with remote production; Latency and how to alleviate it; Control and how to extend\sworkflows to the venue; Infrastructure and how raw signals are delivered back to base. This article will clearly illustrate how these issues are currently overcome by linking and coordinating scattered production resources through Wide Area Networks.

Solutions partners Net Insight, Calrec, and Grass Valley will describe in this paper how a common technological strategy is already providing broadcasters with a full, proven, and straightforward means to create much more live content.

Remote video production is the ability to produce live broadcasts at a distance from the actual event by transmitting raw (ISO) feeds, audio, and equipment control over a telecom infrastructure to a central studio facility, from where you have the possibility to remotely control\scam-eras and other equipment at the event site. Production is concentrated at the broadcaster's studio facilities.

Remote production 2.0 – Camera signal transmission

Live At-Home remote productions have been an issue in the broadcast business for some time. As described before,\this is mostly driven by the necessity for generating more content with the same or less expenditure.

In typical OB productions, a big quantity of highly expensive\equipment is “on the road” for most of the time and can only be used for a very short period generating material. At the same time,\sa huge production staff has to go following the equipment\sto the same sites. Being able to retain most of the equipment\sand operational employees in-house and just have a limited amount of equipment and operational people on-site will give a much\more efficient approach to generating high-quality content.

Sadly, the majority of remote production systems available today send all input and output signals from the camera base stations from the production location to the studio facility.

These systems need entire camera chains at the production site and do not provide any benefits in the utilization of video equipment.

In addition, a considerable lot of specialized and costly hardware is required for converting, multiplexing, and modulating the multiple video, audio, and control signals into IP interfaces.

Adding to that, these solutions' set-up, maintenance, and control are quite difficult and time intensive – this may lead to unpredictable mistakes.

Making Live At-Home remote productions a more flexible and\cost-efficient alternative to standard OB productions has to be realized. But in addition, it has to enable a process where a reduced number of people is necessary to travel.
